In Can I Put New Grout Over Old Grout

When looking at your tile’s grout, you may notice that it’s either slightly or grossly discolored. Your first thought may be to simply go down to your local hardware store and purchase new grout. Many of our customers have tried this approach and the end result is usually less than flattering. Due to the nature of grout, it’s recommended that you remove the bad, cracked grout before applying new grout. It’s also highly recommended that you ensure you have grout that’s color-matched to your existing grout. Failure to color-match your new grout will result in a very apparent discrepancy in appearance.

can I put new grout over my old grout?

When it comes to applying new grout over old grout, you’re going to run into a few issues. One issue is that your old grout may show through your new grout due to the limited space to which you can apply the new grout. Additionally, you’re really only putting a “band-aid” on something that requires much more. We utilize specific equipment to remove your old grout so we have a clean slate to apply the new grout. The process is not simple for your everyday homeowner. If you feel uncomfortable with removing your old grout before applying new grout, we highly recommend consulting with a professional, licensed and insured tile contractor in Northern Virginia. Of course, we happen to be both licensed and insured in the state of Virginia.

In addition to our experience in regrouting in Fairfax, and other areas of Northern Virginia, we carry all the necessary equipment to fix your grout issues in a quick and efficient manner. Again, we advise against putting new grout over the top of old grout. This is not the correct way to ensure your tiled surfaces will maintain a nice appearance. In addition to the possibility of your old grout showing through your new grout, you’ll most likely end up with areas where the new grout didn’t fully adhere to the old grout. This will result in chipping and you’ll need to apply new grout much faster than if you’d simply removed the old, bad grout.
